Expert tips for choosing furniture to fit your space, avoid having and "OH NO!" moment when you purchase new furniture.

Evaluate Where the Furniture Will Live

First things first, take a look around your room.  How big is it?  Is there a lot of natural light?  Are the ceilings high or just the standard 8 feet?

  1. Measure the space where the piece of furniture will be.  Allow for at least 2 feet of clearance around the piece for walking space.
  2. Small space?  Choose smaller furniture, low profile, less ornate pieces will work best.
  3. Large space?  Choose larger furniture, overstuffed, ornate or detailed pieces will work great.
  4. Not much natural light?  Consider furniture with legs that allow you to see under the piece.  Lower profile pieces, lighter color upholstery and, furniture with glass will make the room feel more open and larger.
  5. Lots of natural light?  You could choose just about any style of furniture you would like, just refer to number 2 and 3 when picking the style.
  6. If your ceilings are taller than 8 feet, feel free to get furniture pieces with a taller profile.  Keep in mind the wall decor you may hang above or around it so that it isn’t out of proportion.

Choosing Furniture for a Small Room

This cute as a button bedroom has a lot of natural light, but it is small.  The iron bed has clearance off the floor and open railing that helps to make the room seem not so small.

In our small bedroom we have plenty of natural light, so we have dark wood furniture.  However, it is too small for a chest of drawers and a dresser, so we opted for two chest of drawers and put them side by side to save space.

Our large family room that we built two summers ago gets lots of natural light.  This made choosing furniture for this space easy.  Large overstuffed leather furniture and the large coffee table use the space well and allow us a comfortable area to lounge in.  Don’t you just love that black and white checked blanket on my hubby’s chair?  Sometimes you just can’t sweat the small stuff, lol!
